- Day 2 at Walton. Took a trip down to the Naze. Really shows the difference in management http://t.co/exJb4yND 2 months ago
Thursday 10th – we headed off to the Mo museum of Sheringhams lifeboats and the offshore windfarm display. We looked at the history of lifeboats in Sheringham and the windfarm development scheme education centre. We then went down to Sheringham promenade and looked at the coastal defences. Sheringham has rock armour, groynes and a sea wall. There is a small amount of evidence of erosion on the land in sheringham as the cliff faces are slumping, there is evidence of erosion on the beach as the rock armour has been worn down.
We then headed to overstrand beach which had, revetments, groynes and a sea wall. Overstrand is well defended protecting the main part of the town However, it appeared that there was evidence that the management is not bring maintained although this could happen in the year. Where the management is not working the effects can be seen through the slumping of the cliffs and the fact that the revetments are in very bad repair. Niall Turner fell in a puddle and it looked like he had wet himself, also Mr Preshous threw rocks at innocent girls and stuck a limpet to his head. The next beach we visited was Happisburgh, we looked at the clay cliffs. Happisburgh has also stopped all coastal management, and since doing so some of the buildings have been lost and also a road. The local residents are not best pleased about this, but the property is not really worth anything except the church and manor house. The authorities will put defences back when the land is eroded near these properties. The authorities have however put some rock armour in place in order to try and keep the locals happy. Some extremely talented girls made some amazing clay pots! The last beach we visited was Sea Palling. Sea Palling has a flood barrier, offshore breakwaters and a sea wall. Sea Palling is at high risk of flooding. Seeing as we were running slightly early we took the opportunity to play beach games, with Tom Hammil and Juliette Millic claiming victories for welling throwing and Emily Lewis claiming the prize for the bombing game. (this was the best part of the whole trip)
